Monographs Provide a Comprehensive Overview of Quality and Patient
Safety in Hospitals Including Indicators and Performance Measures
The Center for Healthcare Governance has published two monographs on
patient safety and quality written by senior leadership at Quantros,
Inc. for its member hospital?s boards of trustees and senior leaders.
The monograph titles include ?Hospital Patient Safety and Quality
Monitoring: A Resource for Governing Boards and Trustees," and "Patient
Safety and Quality Reporting for Governance: Data Reporting Guide for
Hospital Staff."
The monographs were developed to provide board members and senior
leaders with a comprehensive overview of the quality and patient safety
journey in healthcare and to provide examples of quality and safety
indicators, and performance measures that can be used to drive effective
oversight. They provide examples on how safety and quality data can be
displayed in oversight and dashboard type reporting format.
Increasingly, data from quality and safety metrics are beginning to
drive pay-for-performance initiatives to improve care management,
decisions on interventions that require significant investments, and the
need to more proactively mitigate risk and have available a knowledge
base for the institutions from which to learn.
The monographs were authored by Sanjaya Kumar, MD, M.Sc, MPH, President
and Chairman of the Board and Catherine Carson-Martin, RN, BSN, MPA,
Director of Programs Management at Quantros, Inc. Quantros provides
real-time knowledge creation and actionable information system solutions
for benchmarking, patient safety work-flow and decision support, quality
and performance improvement (regulatory reporting), accreditation and
compliance self-monitoring, and outcomes monitoring for healthcare
providers, payers, and pharmaceutical companies. Quantros is pioneering
the evolution of healthcare data by providing a broader set of
integrated decision support solutions that span disparate data sources
and provide the most comprehensive view of safety and quality data
available today.
According to Dr. Kumar, ?Having effective and efficient portrayal of
data in a simple easy to understand format is a central issue for
governing boards and hospital leadership. We were pleased when the
Center for Healthcare Governance asked for our contribution to further
the knowledge base in this area. These monographs provide not only a
definitive overview of the quality and patient safety landscape today,
but also present the challenges that hospitals face in aggregating,
collating and presenting needed data and how to effectively address
those challenges with various stakeholders.?
In addition to co-authoring the monographs Dr. Kumar was a guest speaker
at the Center for Healthcare Governance?s January 2006 Symposium in
Naples, Florida where he presented "Driving Safety, Quality, and
Performance Improvement- A Roadmap for Executives".
The monographs can be ordered by calling the Center for Healthcare
Governance at 888-540-6111.
