U.S. Pharmacopeia Selects Quantros for Management and Expansion of its MEDMARX® Solution

Partnership Will Provide the World’s Largest Database for Medication Errors and Adverse Drug Events

December 7, 2007 - San Francisco, CA - U.S. Pharmacopeia, the official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines sold in the United States, has selected Quantros as its partner to manage and expand the footprint of its MEDMARX solution. This partnership will further the establishment of the largest data repository of adverse medication events (preventable medication errors and adverse drug reactions) in the United States and worldwide. Under the partnering relationship Quantros will assume complete management of the MEDMARX application and associated operations, including marketing, sales and client support. In addition to continuing to offer MEDMARX as a stand-alone system, Quantros will integrate the MEDMARX offering with its Safety and Risk Management (SRM) solution for patient safety events. This gives SRM clients the option to access the combined data repository to better identify key trends and improvement opportunities to address medication safety issues.

Since 1998 Quantros and U.S. Pharmacopeia have independently focused their efforts on delivering high value clinical informatics solutions, assisting healthcare providers in capturing key data and evaluating medication errors and adverse drug events. This has enabled healthcare professionals in determining the impact of medication errors, thereby improving care delivery systems and processes. With this relationship, the companies will create additional value for the MEDMARX offering by enhancing functionality and integration with the Quantros SRM system including advanced data analytic tools. U.S. Pharmacopeia will continue to utilize the aggregate MEDMARX database for further research and knowledge creation regarding medication errors and adverse drug events.

“There are numerous synergies between the two organizations that make USP and Quantros ideal partners,” says Dr. Roger Williams, Executive Vice President and CEO of U.S. Pharmacopeia. Dr. Williams further noted that “this collaboration will make MEDMARX an even more valuable offering for the healthcare industry and further a mutual goal of continually reducing the risk of adverse medication errors.”

According to Dr. Sanjaya Kumar, President and CEO of Quantros, “this opportunity unites two companies that have each provided unique database solutions and services to improve patient safety. Our mutual vision and values in the areas of clinical quality and safety provide the ideal foundation for establishing this relationship.” Dr. Kumar also asserted that the shared efforts will bring enhanced value to the healthcare community based on each individual company’s strengths, product and service offerings. This will be accomplished by expanding and integrating product and service offerings to current and new clients.

“As an industry we can learn more from larger datasets and establish a deeper understanding of the nature and causation of preventable errors, including epidemiologic profiles of medications that are commonly involved in errors,” commented Dr. Ali Rashidee, Product Manager for Safety and Risk product suite at Quantros. “For furthering medication safety this is a great leap that will provide healthcare institutions with better insight in preventing errors and creating safer delivery environments,” he asserted.

Current MEDMARX clients will continue to have uninterrupted access to the application, with the choice to further integrate with Quantros SRM for more comprehensive patient safety event data management. Current clients using both MEDMARX and Quantros SRM will be offered the additional option of single point data entry for medication errors and adverse drug events through SRM event work-flow management, and to concurrently utilize the value of the MEDMARX database and analytic tools. For aggregate and blinded comparative analysis and benchmarking, the MEDMARX database will be the largest database of its kind in the US and internationally.
